Rapist gets life term after 16yrs
A rapist got life-term imprisonment in Rangpur yesterday, 16 years after the incident.
However, he was absent at the court.
The convicted is Rezwan Ali of Kalupara village of Rangpur's Badarganj upazila. He was a neighbour of the victim.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Md Rokonuzzaman delivered the verdict at a crowded courtroom. The court also fined Rezwan Tk 1 lakh.
According to case statements, the victim, who was a housewife and mother, was staying home alone, as her rickshaw-puller husband used to work in Dhaka.
On the night of March 2 in 2004, when the woman came out of the house, Rezwan caught and raped her.
Locals rushed to the scene, as the woman screamed for help, but the rapist fled. Later, the woman filed a case with Badarganj police station accusing the man. Accordingly, the investigation officer of the case filed the charge sheet against him.
Rezwan has been skipping court hearings after getting bail.
Jahangir Hossain Tuhin, the court's public prosecutor, said the court gave the judgement after examining all documents and evidence.
The same court gave another judgement of a rape case on November 4, 10 years after the incident in the same upazila.
It sentenced Mosfekur Rahman, who was absent at court, to life-term imprisonment.
