'Raisul Huq Bahar was a true patriot'
Raisul Huq Bahar was a true patriot who held the spirit of the Liberation War in his heart and passed his life honestly, keeping himself away from all sorts of greed, speakers at a memorial programme for the veteran journalist and freedom fighter said yesterday in the port city.
Muktijoddha Raisul Huq Bahar Smriti Parishad organised the meeting at Bangabandhu Auditorium of Chattogram Press Club.
Chairman of Muktijuddha Gobeshona Kendra Dr Mahfuzur Rahman said Bahar was not only a valiant freedom fighter, but also held spirit of the Liberation War in his heart throughout his life.
He kept himself away from greed, said Mahfuzur, adding that Bahar took journalism as part-time profession despite being a officer of Chattogram Port, to earn an honest living.
Poet and journalist Abul Momen, who presided over the meeting, said Bahar became the nearest person for people from different strata of life through his honesty, sincerity and cordial nature.
Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star, said, “In my first meeting with him, I intuitively understood that Bahar bhai was such a kind of person with whom I could not only work but also be friends with.”
“During his stint at The Daily Star, we had an intellectual partnership with mutual dignity,” he added.
Bahar was a true example of holding the spirit of the Liberation War in heart, he said, adding, Bahar was so honest that being an officer of Chattogram Port, he chose journalism as a profession in the evening to maintain his family.
Prof Dr AQM Serajul Islam, president of Peshajibi Samannoy Parishad Chattogram, said Bahar was a role model before the young generation of the country, adding, his demise would affect the country.
President of Chattogram Journalists' Association Nazimuddin Shyamol said Bahar was a lighthouse for young journalists.
General Secretary of Chattogram unit of Communist Party of Bangladesh Ashok Shaha, Journalist Subhash Dey, freedom fighters Muzaffar Ahmed and Mohammad Shahabuddin, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader Jasim Uddin, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist) leader Apu Dasgupta and member secretary of Muktijoddha Raisul Huq Bahar Smriti Parishad Dr Shushanta Barua, also spoke among others.
Raisul Huq Bahar was bureau chief of The Daily Star in Chattogram between 2010 and 2015, and also served local dailies Suprobhat Bangladesh and Dainik Purbokone as associate editor. He died of a cardiac arrest on September 18.
