Wielding shoes and brooms in protest
Awami League activists of Fatikchhari upazila in Chattogram yesterday brought out a procession with shoes in their hands as a symbol of protest against the party nominated candidate (Chattogram-2) for the December 30 national election.
They demonstrated in Pourasabha Chattar area against Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, also the chairman of Tarikat Federation, a partner of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance, reports our staff correspondent.
Mojibul Haque Chowdhury, president of Fatikchhari upazila Awami League, said they want an AL candidate, not one from the alliance partners. “We wrote to the party high command regarding out demand. We hope they would change the decision. Otherwise, we would rally behind our independent candidate and ensure his victory.”
ATM Peyarul Islam, an executive member of AL's Chattogram district (south) unit, who was denied AL nomination, has filed his nomination paper for the Chattogram-2 constituency as an independent candidate.
Meanwhile, in Gaibandha, activists of district Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal demonstrated holding brooms, protesting BNP's decision of giving party nomination to former district Jatiya Party president Abdur Rashid Sarker, reports our correspondent. Members of the women wing of BNP said though Abdur Rashid used to be a JP leader, he filed nomination as BNP candidate for Gaibandha-2 (Sadar area).
A protest meeting was also held at Shaheed Minar, where they criticised the decision of BNP high-ups for nominating a candidate of another party, ignoring dedicated party members.
