Propaganda being spread through few online news portals
Information Minister Hasan Mahmud yesterday said a few online news portals are being used for spreading propaganda.
Such news portals are acting in such a way as if they do not have any responsibility for the society, the country or the people, he also said.
The minister made the remarks while delivering his speech as the chief guest of Chattogram Press Club's biennial conference at the auditorium of the organisation in the port city.
Hasan Mahmud, however, said all online news portals in the country would be regulated through the Broadcasting Act, which is still being formulated. “In order to bring them under a policy, we have primarily completed collection of data and investigation of the online news portals. Those will be brought under a registration [process] once the Broadcasting Act is finalised.”
Mentioning that the new generation prefers online news to print newspapers for its easier access, the minister said, “The online [news portals] are today's necessity. [Although] some online [news portals] are doing great [by serving] the nation and society responsibly with their objective journalism, some [others] are definitely not [doing objective journalism].”
Chattogram city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin formally opened the conference where Chattogram Press Club President Kalim Sarwar and its General Secretary Suklal Das were also present, among others.
