Posing as Titas officials
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police on Saturday arrested five people in connection with embezzlement and defrauding people by posing as Titas Gas officers. The arrestees allegedly misappropriated a hefty amount of money by promising to provide illegal gas connections to residential and commercial establishments.
The arrestees are -- Shahadat Khan (45), Aftai Uddin Rahat (24), Zahidur Rahman alias Jabed (43), Jahangir Alam (50), and Farid Hossain alias Aslam (40).
A team of CID arrested them from Jatrabari and Motijheel areas in the capital.
The team made the arrests while investigating a case filed by Al Masud, owner of Café Al Masud, with Jatrabari Police Station on December 30 last year.
“Posing as Titas Gas officers and contractors, the arrestees and their accomplices embezzled a total of Tk 49.50 lakh from a restaurant owner in Bangshal in October last year,” said Kaniz Fatema, special superintendent of CID (Dhaka Metro East).
“They have no relation with Titas Gas,” Sub-Inspector Aksadud Zaman, investigation officer (IO) of the case, told The Daily Star.
“They were just bluffing people by promising illegal gas connections in residential and commercial units in different parts of the capital,” he added.
There are few more people involved wizth the fraudulent gang, he added.
“Drive is underway to arrest others,” the investigation officer said.
During the drive, CID also recovered Tk 1.20 lakh of embezzled money from Shahadat.
