Petition seeks Tk 1cr compensation for each victim family
A rights organisation yesterday filed a writ petition with the High Court, seeking its directives on the government to give Tk 1 crore as compensation to each family of 11 victims who died in an accident at a Sirajganj level crossing four days ago.
Eleven people -- including a newly married couple -- were killed when a Dhaka-bound train rammed their microbus in Ullapara on July 15.
Law and Life Foundation, in its petition, also requested the HC to order the government to give Tk 10 lakh in compensation to each of the injured passengers.
Citing the petition, the petitioner’s lawyer Barrister Humayun Kabir Pallab told The Daily Star that the accident took place due to negligence of the government officials who are responsible for ensuring safety at the level crossing.
Secretary to the ministries of railway and the local government and rural development, director general of Bangladesh Railway and chief engineer of local government and engineering department were mentioned as respondents in the petition.
Pallab also said he prayed to the HC to direct the respondents to deploy gatemen at all level crossings across the country, close illegal ones and stop carrying passengers on train roofs.
The HC may hear the petition on July 21, said the lawyer.
