People suffering from 'digital phobia': Rizvi
BNP yesterday alleged that the people of the country are now suffering from “digital phobia” as the government has enacted Digital Security Act to “restrict” freedom of expression.
“You (government) have formulated various black laws, including the Digital Security Act, to gag democracy, people's voice and suppress freedom of expression,” Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, senior joint secretary general of BNP, told journalists at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in Dhaka.
Rizvi also alleged that people now cannot say anything openly out of fear of repression. “People are now suffering from digital phobia.”
Referring to a media report on the procurement of electronic voting machines (EVMs), he said the cat has now come out of the bag as the EVMs were purchased at 11 times higher prices than in India.
The BNP leader alleged that the main motive behind procuring the EVMs is to plunder huge amounts of public money ahead of the national election.
About Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder's boycott of yesterday's EC meeting, Rizvi said it was the right decision against the backdrop of freedom of expression being snatched.
