Patuakhali teacher loses leg in road accident

Three teenagers among six killed across country

A primary schoolteacher lost his right leg as iron rods from a rickshaw-van hit him while he was riding a motorcycle in Patuakhali town yesterday.

The accident happened on Circuit House Road while Md Saifuzzaman, a teacher of Boprobighai Government Primary School, along with his brother Kamruzzaman was going to the town's new market after a meeting at upazila primary education office.

Kamruzzaman, another primary schoolteacher, said his brother was on the pillion seat. “The rods hit them while we were passing through Public Library Bhaban.”

Both of them fell down from the bike, he said.

“His [Saifuzzaman's] right got severed from the thigh joint as a rod pierced through it,” said Kamruzzaman, who sustained minor injuries.

Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Patuakhali Police Station, said Saifuzzaman was taken to Patuakhali General Hospital from where he was later referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.

The driver of the motorised rickshaw-van managed to flee, said the police officer.

In Pabna, two women were killed and another was injured when a truck hit a battery-run three-wheeler in Shimultola area of Chatmohar upazila yesterday.

Hasin Bagum, 40; and Firoza Begum, 45; from the area, who were on the three-wheeler, died on the spot, said police.

Police seized the truck but the driver managed to escape.

In Chattogram, a man was killed as a bus hit him while he was crossing Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Shitakunda upazila yesterday.

The victim -- identified as Nasir Sawdagor, 48 -- was declared dead at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said police.

In Madaripur, two teenage boys were killed as their motorbike hit a truck parked on Madaripur-Shariatpur road in Motherbazar area of Sadar upazila on Wednesday.

The victims -- Diganta Mollah, 17, son of Yunus Mollah from Tulasara village; and Sumon Sordar, 17, son of Khokhon Sardar from Baluchara village in Shariatpur -- died on the spot.

In Chapainawabganj, a motorcyclist was killed as a tractor and the bike collided in Kalinagar village of Sadar upazila yesterday.

Waliul Islam, 19, succumbed to his injuries on the way to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital, said police.

The driver of the tractor managed to flee the scene, said the law enforcers.
