Operation to salvage clinker-laden vessel begins
A private company started to salvage the clinker-laden vessel on Wednesday, 17 days after it had capsized in the river Kirtankhola.
Primarily, a 25-member team started removing the clinker from inside the cargo -- Md Dudu Mia-1, said Sumon Kumar Das, supervisor of “PS Salvage” involved in rescue operation.
On December 14 last year, the cargo vessel carrying 1,200 tonnes of clinker sank near Barishal River Port while it was going to Barishal’s Dapdapia area to deliver the goods to Olympic Cement Company.
Sumon said it will take more than 20 days to complete the rescue operation.
Md Rafiqul Islam, joint director, conservancy and pilotage department of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) in Barishal, said, “We had tried in vain to salvage the sunken vessel with our rescue vessel ‘Nirbhik’.”
The sunken cargo vessel was carrying around 1,722 tonnes of clinker, said the BIWTA official, adding that “Nirbhik” was able to salvage only 250 tonnes, as per its capacity.
