'Open fire if anyone tries to snatch ballots'

EC Rafiqul tells police in N'ganj

Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam yesterday directed law enforcers to open fire, if anyone tries to snatch ballot box in the upcoming phase of upazila polls.

“Law enforcers will have to take action if anyone tries to snatch ballot box. If necessary, they will open fire,” he said.

The election commissioner made the remark while speaking as chief guest at a views-exchange meeting on law and order situation at the conference room of the district's deputy commissioner (DC) office.

The meeting was convened by district administration ahead of upcoming upazila parishad polls. Three upazils of the district – Rupganj, Araihazar and Sonargaon -- will go to  election on March 31.

“Those who will cause disorder will be dealt with a strong hand. No political consideration will work,” said Rafiqul.

The meeting also decided to deploy Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members and additional police at the polling stations located at char (shoal) areas.

DC Rabbi Miah and superintendent of police Harun-ur-Rashid, among others, also attended the function.
