One criminal, six policemen injured
A mugger was hit by bullets and six policemen were injured in a gunfight between a group of muggers and police in port city's Asadganj area yesterday evening.
After the gunfight, police arrested the wounded mugger, Wasim, 38. He was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Police also seized a firearm and an axe from the spot.
Inspector (investigation) Mohammed Kamruzzaman of Kotwali Police Station said Wasim stands accused in 15 cases filed over different charges with different police stations of the city.
The gunfight took place at Goachi Bagan area around 4pm, said Kamruzzaman.
The inspector said Wasim and his cousins Riad and Parvej used to mug businessmen in the area.
Upon allegations from victims, a team of police went to Goachi Bagan area where Wasim and his cohorts were positioned around 4pm, Inspector Kamruzzaman said.
Sensing the presence of police, the muggers started pelting stones and opened fire targeting police personnel. Police also opened fire in retaliation, said the inspector.
Over 60 rounds of bullets were fired during the incident. Wasim's cohorts fled the spot at one point, he added. Police later arrested Wasim with bullet wounds and in possession of a firearm and an axe.
The injured police personnel were given primary treatment and police are trying to arrest the other criminals.
