Offspring of freedom fighters get Indian scholarships
The High Commission of India handed over scholarship cheques to 104 offspring of freedom fighters at a ceremony in Barisal yesterday.
High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla awarded the scholarships, worth Tk 37.8 lakh, to secondary, higher secondary and university students in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Auditorium.
A total of 10,000 students will be given scholarships over the next five years, he said.
The ceremony was presided over by Abul Kalam Azad, president of Muktijoddha Academy, where newly-elected mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah was present as chief guest.
Lawmakers Talukdar Md Yunus and Pankaj Debnath, Deputy Commissioner of Barisal Habibur Rahman and Police Commissioner Mosharraf Hossain were also present.
