Nusrat murder: Demo seeks judicial probe
Demonstrators rallied in Dhaka’s Shahbagh today demanding a judicial inquiry into police’s role in the killing of madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
They alleged that the officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain was involved in the killing and demanded his immediate arrest.
Students Community Against Rape and Sexual Violence arranged the protest rally in front of the National Museum in the capital this afternoon.
The platform’s Convener Shibly Hasan said that “the police are not guilty of negligence here but are rather involved in the murder of Nusrat”.
“The case was filed on March 27, but the police took no prompt action,” he said.
WHAT ARE THE CHARGES AGAINST THE OC?
Sonagazi OC Moazzem Hossain was sued under the Digital Security Act on April 15, on charges of recording a video of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi without her consent and spreading the footage on social media.
After a hearing, Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossain took cognisance of the case, recorded the statement of the complainant and instructed the deputy inspector general of Police of the Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter and submit a report by April 30.
On April 10, the OC was withdrawn as Nusrat family's alleged that they were not getting his full cooperation.
BRUTALITY AGAINST NUSRAT
Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Sonagazi upazila of Feni, was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against the madrasa principal Siraj Ud Doula for sexually harassing her last month.
After fighting for her life for five days, Nusrat died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.
