No respite from road accidents
The country witnessed eight fatal road accidents in the last two days, leaving 10 people dead and 25 persons injured, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Chattogram, three friends were killed after a motorbike they were on hit a roadside tree yesterday.
The accident took place on Muhuri project road in Mirsarai area, said highway police.
Mehedi, 30, from Molaish; Arif, 20, from Sonapahar; and Ismail, 22, from Ichchakhali, were declared dead at local upazila health complex.
In another incident, an eight-year-old student of a local madrasa died instantly after a truck hit him at Golarghat Bazar in Satkania upazila yesterday morning.
Sadik, son of Mohammad Salim from Pashchim Dhemsa area in the upazila, was walking to the madrasa, said Shafiul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station.
Mohiuddin, driver of the truck, was detained in connection with the accident, he added.
In Jamalpur, a truck plunged into a canal in Fulkarchar area of Islampur upazila early yesterday, leaving the driver dead.
The sand-laden vehicle broke the railing when it was halfway on the bridge as the driver lost control over the vehicle, said Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Islampur Police Station.
A team of firefighters recovered the body of Mobarak Ali, 35, who was from neighbouring Sherpur.
Similarly, earlier on March 3, a microbus driver Ruhul Amin, 50, died as his vehicle fell into a river from a bridge in the district.
In Faridpur, a motorbike rider died yesterday as a truck hit the bike from behind in Taltola area of Sadar upazila.
Chahor Uddin Sheikh, 38, from Dirazulla Matbordangi village, was declared dead at Faridpur Medical College Hospital, said police.
Police seized the truck but the driver managed to escape.
In Panchagarh, a driver of a three-wheeler was killed and five people injured when the vehicle and a motorbike collided head-on at Fakirganj Bazar in Atwari upazila yesterday.
Munna Haque, son of Manik Hossain from Chhotodap village, succumbed to his injuries on the way to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, said police.
Meanwhile, a man was killed as two human hauliers collided head-on on Atwari-Panchagarh road in front of Mirza Golam Hafiz College in Atway upazila the same day.
Shamsul Haque, 56, from Mirzapur village, succumbed to his injuries at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.
In Dinajpur, a lorry hit a motorcycle killing its rider on the spot in Parbatipur upazila yesterday.
The victim -- Mohibul Islam, 27 -- was from Uttar Khalilpu Mollahpara in Parbatipur, said law enforcers.
In Manikganj, a man was killed and 20 persons were injured as a Khulna-bound bus from Dhaka fell into a ditch beside Dhaka-Aricha highway in Mohadevpur area of Shivalaya upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased -- Harun Mia, 42, from Laxmipur Sadar -- was helper of the bus driver.
Yamiin-ud-Daula, in-charge of Barangail Highway Police Outpost, said the injured were taken to a local hospital.
