No bold decision from UN: Momen
United Nations Security Council was not able to take any bold decision, or adapt a resolution on the Rohingya issue due to lack of consensus among permanent members, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen informed the parliament yesterday.
He also said that UN bodies and other non-governmental organisations not being allowed into Northern Rakhine is a big hurdle for creating a conducive situation for Rohingya repatriation. As a result, the refugees are not interested to return.
Momen said there are strong diplomatic efforts for resolving Rohingya crisis at United Nations Security Council, UN General Assembly and UN Human Rights Council, but UNSC was unable to take steps due to lack of consensus.
He said that there is no alternative to continuing bilateral discussion with Myanmar for resolving Rohingya crisis. “We can say from previous experience that Myanmar isn’t keen on implementing bilateral arrangements in absence of pressure from international community,’’ he said.
The foreign minister while answering a query from Awami League MP Ishrafil Alam said that the repatriation process is “complex and time-consuming.”
