Nine killed in road crashes

An upazila-level leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League and an elderly man were killed and several were injured, when a speeding truck hit the human haulier carrying them in Mirsharai upazila of Chattogram on Tuesday.

The deceased are Md Mosharraf Hossain, 30; and Delwar Hossain Alauddin, 60, said locals.

Firefighters rushed to the spot and sent the injured to different hospitals with help of locals, said fire service.

The truck driver fled the scene with the vehicle after the accident.

Meanwhile, at least seven people were killed and nine injured in other accidents across the country in the last two days, our correspondents report.

In Bagerhat, eighth-grader Mohammad Ali, 14, was killed and two other students -- Zobair and Bappi -- were injured when a pickup truck collided with the motorbike carrying them at Sadar Chowrangi road in Mollahat upazila yesterday.

Police said the accident left all three critically injured. Locals rushed them to a nearby health complex where a doctor declared Ali dead.

Police are trying to catch the driver, they added.

In another accident in the district, three people were killed and one was injured, when two trucks collided on Rampal Thermal Power Plant Road in Rampal upazila on Tuesday.

One of the deceased is Yasin, 22. Identity of the other two killed could not be ascertained. The injured was taken to a local health complex, said police.

In Bogura, two people were killed and four others injured when a truck overturned on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Gohal Bazar area in Shajahanpur upazila on Tuesday, said police.

The deceased are Tofazzal Bari, 42, and Nurul Islam, 45. They died on the spot. The injured were being treated at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Police seized the truck and auto-rickshaw, but the truck driver managed to flee, police added.

In Satkhira, Mostafizzur Rahman, 24, was killed and two others were injured when a motorised van collided with the motorbike carrying them at Chaltetla road in Shyamnagar upazila on Tuesday, said police quoting locals.

The three injured were referred to Satkhira Sadar Hospital, but Mostafizzur died on the way there.
