Newspaper workers express grievances over cut-down of some benefits
Newspaper workers’ associations yesterday expressed grievances for cutting down some benefits -- including reduction of gratuity and individual income tax payment -- in the recently gazetted ninth wage board award for journalists and employees of newspapers and news agencies.
In a joint press statement, Bangladesh Newspaper Workers’ Federation and Bangladesh Federal Union of Newspaper Press Workers said the recommendations of reducing gratuity from two to one and introducing income tax payment by individuals instead of institutions were “not reasonable”.
The associations urged the government to amend both recommendations and publish an additional edition of the gazette.
They issued the press statement after holding a joint meeting in the capital’s Paltan on Monday.
During the meeting, the association leaders, however, thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for approving the wage board, according to the statement.
On September 14, the government published a gazette on the ninth wage board award for journalists and employees of newspapers and news agencies.
The information ministry published the gazette, dated September 12, on its website. The gazette came into effect on the date of publication.
