New patients keep coming to hospitals
The spread of dengue virus continues in many districts of the country, as the number of infected patients are rising day by day.
Local health officials claimed that they are working hard to provide medicare services to patients and to check spread of the virus.
However, health professionals in some districts said they are yet to be equipped to provide the service properly, as they have not got dengue detection kits.
Patients in some districts also alleged that some private clinics were overcharging in diagnosing dengue.

In Chattogram, 33 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals of the port city yesterday, taking the number of patients identified with dengue fever to 303 in the district.
Some 28 dengue patients were admitted yesterday to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Akhterul Islam, deputy director of the hospital. A total of 99 dengue patients were undergoing treatment in the hospital currently, he said, adding that none of them developed complications from the fever.
In Barishal division, a total of 67 new patients infected with dengue were recorded in 24 hours till yesterday noon, raising the total number to 385 in six districts, said Dr Shyamal Krishna Mandal, divisional assistant director of Directorate General of Health Services in Barishal.
However, doctors there are facing trouble as no dengue detection kit -- which are supposed to be provided by the government -- has so far arrived in the division, said Dr Abdur Rahim, divisional heath director.
Talking to The Daily Star, many patients alleged that some private clinics in Barishal city were overcharging from patients for dengue tests.
In Mymensingh, some 36 patients were identified in 24 hours till yesterday morning, raising the tally of infected persons to 335, said Dr AB Md Shamsuzzaman, assistant director of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
The hospital has been providing dengue virus detection service free of cost since last Tuesday.
In Kishoreganj, 25 new infected persons were identified in 24 hours till yesterday morning, bringing the number of infected persons to 226, said the district’s Civil Surgeon Dr Md Habibur Rahman.
In Netrakona, a total of six dengue patients have so far been identified, said the district’s Civil Surgeon Dr Tajul Islam Khan.
In Jashore, 19 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals on Friday, bringing the tally of patients to 134, said sources at the district civil surgeon office.
Talking to The Daily Star, the district’s acting civil surgeon Imdadul Haque Raju said all necessary measures including setting up monitoring cell and control room has been taken to prevent the spread of dengue in the district.
In Gaibandha, a total of 18 people have been infected till yesterday, said the district’s Civil Surgeon Dr ABM Abu Hanif.
All the patients here were infected during their recent visits to Dhaka, Hanif told The Daily Star.
In Jhenidah, a total of 50 dengue patients have so far been identified, said Abdul Kader, statistics officer of the district civil surgeon’s office.
In Sirajganj, a total of 114 cases of dengue have so far been detected. Meanwhile, the district health office has found larvae of Aedes mosquito in the district.
“We have already checked vulnerable spots in the district headquarters, and found existence of larvae of Aedes mosquitoes,” said the district’s Civil Surgeon Dr Md Jahidul Islam.
In Pabna, some 70 infected patients have so far been identified, said Md Sohel, record keeper of Pabna Medical College Hospital.
Talking to journalists, the district’s Civil Surgeon Dr Mehedi Iqbal claimed there was no larvae of Aedes mosquito in the district and all the patients were from Dhaka or elsewhere outside the district.
However, some patients told this newspaper that they did not travel outside Pabna recently.
“I did not go outside Pabna in last few months. I don’t know how I was infected with dengue,” said Abdul Kuddus, a resident of Bilviduria village, who was undergoing treatment at Pabna Medical College Hospital yesterday.
