Muhith vows to protect it
Former Finance Minister AMA Muhith vowed to work towards protecting the historic building at Chowhatta area in Sylhet city.
During a visit to the building area on Sunday morning, Muhith said he will write to the concerned authorities to protect the building.
The building, which was being used as a male hostel of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, is a symbol of the iconic Assam pattern houses of the region. It is waiting to be demolished in order to build Sylhet District Hospital.
Citizens of Sylhet were protesting the demolition plan since the construction work began, and on request of the protestors, Muhith visited the place.
Muhith urged the authorities to find another place for the district hospital and establish a museum in the building.
He said, “I was committed to establish a museum in Sylhet as per my election manifesto but I couldn't. I wish that the government will consider the proposal of establishing a museum here.”
CM Tofael Sami, Jalalbad Association's former president; Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, district unit of Awami League secretary, and others were present during the visit.
