Motihar Hall provost resigns
The provost of Motihar Hall at Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday resigned protesting the university proctor’s alleged misuse of power in affairs of the residential hall.
Prof Dr M Ali Asgar at a press conference on the university campus made the announcement of stepping down from the post.
"On February 1 [Friday], I evicted a non-resident student, Jony Mia of academic session 2018-19, who occupied a seat illegally in the hall by depriving another lawful student. It was learnt that he is also an activist of RU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League [BCL]."
However, the same day, the proctor went to the hall and reassigned the seat to Jony Miah and removed Rakibul Hasan, the original assignee of the seat, from the dormitory. “He has no right to allot any seat to any student without consulting the hall authorities. He did so BY abusing his proctorial power, which is illegal," Prof Asgar said to journalists.
He also said he resigned from the post to protest the incident.
At a separate conference, Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman denied the allegation, saying that the claim made by Prof Asgar was baseless and it was a conspiracy against him. “I am not involved in assigning any seat by throwing out any lawful [resident] student. I strongly condemn these false accusations made by Prof Asgar."
On Friday, after Prof Asgar evicted Jony Mia, nearly a hundred BCL activists padlocked the gate of Motihar Hall and chanted slogans against the dormitory authorities. Proctor Prof Lutfor later arrived at the scene to quell the situation.
