Mother, two children die at CMCH
A woman and her two children died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) yesterday, after being admitted there by her husband the day before.
The victims are Daisy Akther, 25, and her two daughters Ella Nur, 6, and eight-month-old Israt Nur.
After admitting them, Daisy’s husband, Nur Nabi, 35, fled the hospital, said police. The family hailed from Sharaf Bhata union of Rangunia.
Daisy’s mother Mortuja Begum alleged that Nabi used to torture her daughter regularly for dowry. “I managed to give him Tk 1 lakh just 20 days ago. Demanding more, he kept on torturing my daughter.”
She said on Monday night Nabi informed that her daughter and two grandchildren consumed poison and he took them to CMCH. “We rushed to the hospital and found that they were dead,” she said.
Alauddin Talukdar, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH police outpost, said Daisy and her daughters were alive when Nabi brought them to the hospital.
“Pretending to buy medicine for the three, he fled. They could have been saved if the medicines were brought on time,” he added.
Asraful Kabir, sub-inspector of Panchlaish Police Station who prepared the inquest report, said Daisy and Ella were bleeding from the nose while Israt had bubbles in her mouth -- a sign of ingesting poison. “We’ll know more after autopsy.”
Imtiaz Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Rangunia Police Station, said, “We will take necessary actions once the victims’ family files a complaint.”
