Mobile court fines three sand traders

A mobile court fined three sand traders for illegally lifting sand from Jamuna river and running illegal sand ghats in Tangail’s Bhuapur upazila yesterday.

Executive Magistrate Aslam Hossain, assistant commissioner (land) in Bhuapur, slapped the fines for defying the Sand Fields and Soil Management Act, 2010, sources said.

The mobile court also burnt a dredger, which was being used to lift sand at Govindashi ghat area.

At least 18 illegal sand ghats are run by influential quarters on the east side of the bridge, locals alleged.

Traders claimed they are using the spots for storing sand extracted in Sirajganj.
