MJF terms HC directive ‘groundbreaking’
Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) yesterday welcomed the recent High Court directive on formation of a commission to stop rape and violence against women.
Terming the directive “groundbreaking”, the rights organisation said it will oblige the government to focus on reducing the number of rape incidents.
The directives by the HC regarding rape were a timely initiative, said MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam in a statement.
MJF has been urging the government to take effective legal measures against rape and violence against women for a long time, it added.
“MJF hopes that the government will now be more eager and active to remove the fear from people’s mind triggered by the rise of rape -- like an epidemic -- across the country,” the statement also said.
On Sunday, an HC bench directed the government to form a commission within 30 days under the law ministry to stop rape and violence against women.
