Man gets life sentence for raping madrasa student
A court in Chattogram yesterday sentenced a man to life-term rigorous imprisonment on charge of raping a madrasa student after abduction in the district’s Banshkhali upazila in 2016.
The convict is Mahmudur Rahman Haidar, hailing from Cox’s Bazar, said court sources.
The court of Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Moshiur Rahman handed down the verdict, crossing all the records and witnesses, said Public Prosecutor Advocate Jesmin Akhter.
Advocate Jesmin said the court sentenced Mahmudur to 14 years in jail for abduction.
He was handed down life-term imprisonment for rape, after he was found guilty beyond doubt.
“Apart from that the court also fined the convict Tk 40,000,” she said.
The convict was sent to jail after the verdict, the public prosecutor told this correspondent.
According to the case statement, a tenth grader of a local madrasa was abducted on her way to class from home in Chambal area of Banshkhali on August 4 of 2016.
Later, failing to trace her, the victim’s father filed a missing complaint with Banshkhali Police Station.
Police rescued the girl from Hamidchar area of port city’s Kalurghat and arrested Mahmudur red-handed.
Victim’s father filed a case accusing Hamid of abduction and rape.
Law enforcers later pressed charges against the accused on October 27 of the same year.
Meanwhile, a court framed charges against him on August 27, 2017.
The public prosecutor said the court recorded the deposition of 11 witnesses.
