Mamtaz Begum passes away
Mamtaz Begum, chairperson of the Jatiyo Mohila Sangstha and wife of Awami League Advisory Council member and Chairman of Bar Council Executive Committee Advocate Syed Rezaur Rahman, passed away at her Dhanmondi residence in Dhaka early yesterday. She was 74.
Mamtaz, also a freedom fighter and Begum Rokeya Padak winner, had been suffering from various physical ailments, family sources said.
Mamtaz was also a former parliament member and ex-general secretary of Bangladesh Mohila Awami League.
She left behind her husband, a son, a daughter and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn her death.
Her namaz-e-janaza was held at the Boro Masjid on North Road at Vuter Goli in the city's Dhanmondi after Zohr prayers yesterday.
She will be buried with state honor at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard.
Mamtaz Begum participated in the Language Movement and the six-point movement and played an important role in 1971 Liberation War and the 1969 Mass Uprising.
After the war, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman founded "Bangladesh Women Rehabilitation Board" in 1972 for the rehabilitation of women who were injured and tortured during the war. Mamtaz served as its director.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Prof Advocate Mamtaz Begum.
In a condolence message, the prime minister recalled with profound respect the outstanding contributions of Mamtaz Begum, also a former Chhatra League leader, to the Liberation War.
Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family. In another condolence message, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury expressed deep shock at the death.
