Make district committee functional to ensure rights
Society for Education and Inclusion of the Disabled (SEID) yesterday claimed that people with disabilities in Dhaka have been deprived of their rights, as the district committee, which was supposed to resolve this issue, is yet to be functional.
The non-government organisation, serving underprivileged people with neuro-developmental disabilities, demanded a functional district committee immediately to prevent all forms of violence, exploitation and discrimination against people with disabilities.
The organisation’s officials formed a human chain on the capital’s National Museum premises to press home their demand. They also submitted a memorandum at the DC office on the same day.
Among all regional committees, Dhaka district committee is the only one that has not even held a single meeting since its inception, although Article 27(2) of Persons with Disabilities Rights and Protection Act 2013, stipulates that district committees must hold four meetings every year, speakers claimed.
According to the article, every district is supposed to have an individual committee to deal with cases of discrimination against people with disabilities. As per Article 36, individuals can apply to the district committee if they want compensation for any discrimination they faced based on their disability, said the NGO officials.
SEID Chairperson Ranjan Karmaker presided over the human chain which was addressed, among others, by former district judge SM Rezaul Karim and the NGO’s programme director Karishma Ahmed.
