Karnaphuli Paper Mill: Workers confine MD for arrears
Workers of Karnaphuli Paper Mill (KPM), the lone state-owned paper manufacturer, have confined its managing director to his office room, demanding arrears.
Around 600 employees laid siege to the office of MMA Abdul Quader in Chandraghona area of Rangamati around 10am yesterday. They were continuing the agitation as of filing this report at 7pm.
Anwar Hossen Bacchu, general secretary of collective bargaining agency of KPM, told The Daily Star that though the government announced a new pay scale for its employees in 2015, the mill authorities did not execute it.
Workers have been given the salary as per old pay scale. On top of that, the authorities did not pay them salary from November last year to January, he alleged. “That's why the workers confined the MD to his office.”
Contacted, the MD said, “We are negotiating with the labour leaders. Hopefully, we will come to a solution soon.”
Sayed Mohammed Nur, officer-in-charge of Kaptai Police Station, said workers were agitating at the factory over arrears. “We are on alert to prevent any untoward situation.”
