Verdict on Risha murder deferred till October 10
A Dhaka court yesterday deferred till October 10 the judgment of the murder of Risha, a class VIII student of Willes Little Flower School, in 2016.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court set the date as Obaidul Khan, the lone accused, could not be produced before it as the police personnel concerned was on Durga Puja duty, court sources said.
Earlier, the court set October 6 to deliver the verdict after conclusion of arguments from the prosecution and defence.
The court recorded statements of 21 prosecution witnesses including the complainant.
Suraiya Akhter Risha,14, died at the ICU of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 28, 2016, four days after she was stabbed allegedly by her stalker Obaidul in front of her school at Kakrail.
Her mother Tania Hossain filed a case against Obaidul with Ramna Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
The death of Risha, eldest child of Ramzan Hossain and Tania Hossain, sparked protests across the capital.
Obaidul was arrested in Nilphamari with locals’ help a week after Risha was stabbed.
Hailing from Dinajpur’s Miradangi village, he used to work at a tailoring shop in Dhaka.
On November 14, 2016, Ali Hossain, inspector of Ramna Police Station, submitted the charge sheet against Obaidul to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. Another Dhaka court framed charges against him on April 17, 2017.
