JU withholds suspension of four students
Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities yesterday withheld the suspension of four students, two days after suspending them for beating a journalist and assaulting a female student on the campus on September 24.
The suspended students are Ya Rafiu Sikder, Mostafizur Rahman and Shohel Rana of public administration department and Shuvashish Ghosh of Bangla department – all activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) JU unit.
The decision came in an email from the university’s public relations office.
“JU Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam took the decision using her executive powers”, said Rohima Kaniz, JU acting registrar.
This correspondent could not reach the VC over phone for her comment even after repeated attempts.
“The decision was taken to probe the matter. Due to the ongoing admission tests, authority did not get time to look into the matter,” JU Proctor Sikder Md Zulkarnaine said.
On September 24, a group of BCL men beat up Mahmudul Haque Sohag, a master's student of journalism department and campus correspondent of an online news portal, while he tried to protect a couple from being assaulted and mugged on the campus.
Another female student of the JMS department was also assaulted in the same incident.
