JU teachers scuffle as syndicate meets
Two factions of Awami League-backed teachers in Jahangirnagar University yesterday got locked in a scuffle at the vice-chancellor's office centring on a syndicate meeting.
The scuffle between the supporters and opponents of VC Prof Farzana Islam broke out when syndicate member Motaher Hossain Mollah, also president of Bangladesh Krishak League, came to join the meeting. He was barred by the VC opponents.
He, however, entered the meeting room with the help of VC-backed teachers, and fulfilled the quorum. The anti-VC teachers allegedly assaulted the syndicate member.
The syndicate meeting was underway till filing of this report around 9:00pm.
The anti-VC syndicate members boycotted the meeting, claiming that the VC did not cooperate with them.
Anti-VC syndicate member Prof Dr Laek Sazzad Andallah said, “We requested the VC for not putting the issue of fresh teacher recruitment on the agenda until holding the dean, syndicate, VC panel, and JUCSU elections. But she did not any pay heed.”
Meanwhile, pro-BNP teachers yesterday held a protest, opposing any fresh recruitment at the Institute of Information Technology (IIT) and demanded immediate appointment of a new director to the institute.
