The 99th anniversary of Dhaka University was observed yesterday with a vow to ensure quality education and research.
This year's celebration -- which was curtailed considering the Covid-19 situation -- began with hoisting the national and university flags and releasing balloons on Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury senate building premises.
A virtual discussion was held on this year's celebration theme: "Dhaka University in its centenary. Context: Movement and struggle", attended by the vice-chancellor, two pro-VCs, three former VCs and senior teachers.
A one-minute silence in remembrance of teachers and staffers of the university who sacrificed their lives during democratic movements and frontliners of the Covid-19 pandemic was also observed.
Addressing the session, DU VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said ensuring research works and quality education will be the pledge of this celebration and urged all concerned to work diligently for its implementation.
Terming DU an integral part of nation's history, National Professor Rafiqul Islam said, "Dhaka University has led all the democratic movements. Teachers, students and staffers of the university sacrificed their lives in these movements … The university has been playing an important role not only in the pursuit of knowledge and science but also in the socio-economic development of the country."
DU commenced its academic activities on July 1 of 1921 with a campus on 600 acres of land, 3 faculties, 12 departments, 60 teachers, 877 students and 3 dormitories.
