Imam found dead inside N’ganj mosque
Police yesterday recovered the body of an imam of a mosque at Mallickpara area under Sonargoan upazila.
The deceased is Didarul Islam, 26, who used to serve as the imam of Narayandia Baitul Jalal Jame Mosque.
A Khulna native, he had been working at the mosque since July 26 this year. He used to live in a room inside the mosque, according to police and locals.
Abu Sayeed, a resident of Mallickpara, said, “Some neighbours and I went to the mosque at dawn to offer Fajr prayers. When we could not find the imam, we thought he might have gone to his village home.”
“On our way back home we heard a ceiling fan running from his room. We found the door locked from outside,” he said.
“After opening the door, we found his beheaded body, and informed police,” said Abu Sayeed.
Didarul was a newcomer there, and did not have rivalry with anyone, Sayeed said.
Contacted, Officer-in-charge of Sonargoan Police Station Moniruzzaman said they could not find any clue or motive behind the murder.
The victim’s elder brother Mizanur Rahman told The Daily Star last night that Didarul had been working as an imam for seven years at various mosques in Khulna, Cumilla and Narayanganj.
“He last spoke to our mother on Wednesday afternoon. Mother asked why he didn’t go home for Eid, to which he told her he would visit home in the next couple of days.”
He further said he didn’t know of his brother having any enemies. “I want justice for my brother,” said a distressed Mizanur.
Filing of a case was underway, while the body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
