I won’t resign: JU VC
A faction of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University yesterday showed “red card” to Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam, demanding her resignation from the post.
Under the banner of “Jahangirnagar Against Corruption”, they staged demonstration in front of Shaheed Minar on the last day of their ultimatum issued for resignation of the VC on September 18.
Addressing the programme, Prof Anwarullah Bhuiyan of philosophy department said, “Today [Tuesday] was the last date of ultimatum, but you [VC] didn’t resign respectfully from your post.”
“We are showing ‘red card’ to the VC as she has failed to operate the university due to corruption,” he added.
“If she doesn’t resign from her post by today [Tuesday], we will force her to do so,” he said.
The demonstrators will go on strike today and tomorrow (October 3), as the VC didn’t resign from her post willingly.
Meanwhile, the vice chancellor yesterday said she would not resign from her post, and also said the protesters’ demand is illogical.
“A group of students and teachers demanded a judicial inquiry in this regard. I informed it to UGC, education ministry, and prime minister’s office. I asked them to handle the situation. As I am not involved in the corruption, I should not form probe body against myself,” she said while speaking to journalists at her office during a press briefing around 2pm.
“Some vested groups are trying to create unrest on the campus, and that is why they wanted my resignation,” Farzana Islam added.
Meanwhile, VC-backed teachers’ platform “Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad” announced they will form a human chain today against the incumbent Pro-VC (admin) Prof Amir Hussain, claiming that he was involved in admission forgery in 2004.
