Honouring tireless work of teachers
Bangla daily Prothom Alo and private financial institution IPDC Finance Limited have jointly launched an award titled “IPDC-Prothom Alo Priyo Shikkhok Shommanona” to honour and recognise contributions of teachers.
A total of 10 current and retired teachers from different primary and secondary schools across the country -- above the age of 50 -- will be given the award following choice of students and a jury process.
The organisers made the announcement at a ceremony in a city hotel yesterday.
They said the teachers will initially be nominated by their students. Any present or former student will be allowed to nominate their favourite teachers, the process of which is expected to begin on October 5, World Teachers’ Day.
Top 20 among them will be selected by a jury for the final round. Then, the favourite teacher award will be conferred on 10 of them, said organisers.
Speaking at the event, prominent academician Prof Syed Manzoorul Islam said teachers are the ones responsible for nurturing generations, but in many cases their salaries are the lowest compared to government salary structures.
“We don’t even provide them adequate social recognition that they deserve,” he added.
Applauding Prothom Alo and IPDC for their “exceptional” initiative, the former Dhaka University professor said such an award will help start the practice of honouring teachers.
Prothom Alo Editor and Publisher Matiur Rahman said they introduced several awards before, but none of those were for teachers. He expressed deep satisfaction for being able to launch the award at last. He also wished that the award would flourish further.
Eminent educationist Rasheda K Chowdhury, ULAB Vice-Chancellor Prof HM Jahirul Haque, IPDC Managing Director Mominul Islam, actors Afsana Mimi, Bonna Mirza, Sajal, Imon and Nirob, and singers Kona, Sumi and Konal, among others, also spoke at the programme.
