Hand over rumour-mongers to police: PM to citizens
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged countrymen to not pay heed to rumours and hand over rumour-mongers to police.
“Please, don’t pay heed to rumours and don’t take law in your own hands,” she said while addressing a meeting of Awami League leaders through teleconference from London.
She also called upon all to keep their houses and office areas clean to curb the mosquito menace.
The meeting, presided over by AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, was held at the ruling party’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue.
Besides central leaders of the party, AL north and south city unit leaders and its associate bodies, and both Dhaka city corporation mayors joined the meeting.
The prime minister said a quarter with vested interest is beating people to death by spreading rumours.
“A mother was beaten to death by spreading rumours…If you think someone is guilty, don’t beat them to death. Hand them over to police.”
CONCERN OVER MILK BAN
Sheikh Hasina also spoke about banning production, marketing, sale and consumption of pasteurised milk -- produced by 14 companies.
The prime minister said that all of a sudden a professor -- after conducting a test -- declared milk of those companies unfit for consumption, and based on it a writ was filed by someone, resulting in a temporary ban.
She said no one thinks about its real impact. “What will be the fate of those who earn their living by selling milk… how will they feed their cows?”
The PM asked whether the professor (ABM Faroque) who conducted the test on milk of the 14 companies examined imported milk.
“I think he didn’t do it. He should examine import, storage, packaging and marketing process of imported milk,” she said.
The prime minister said Bangladesh does not want to remain dependent on imports, rather it wants to become self-reliant.
“We want to meet the demands of the country by producing all goods,” she said.
“It should be examined whether there is any ploy by the importers and whether they are encouraging anyone to this end,” she said.
The premier said her government is encouraging people to set up dairy farms.
“We’ve ensured food security; now we want to ensure nutrition,” she said.
