Govt will collapse if corruption not curbed
The government will collapse if proper steps are not taken against corruption, leaders of Biplobi Workers’ Party said yesterday.
BWP leaders came up with the remarks at a press conference held at their office in Segunbagicha area of the capital.
The anti-graft drive has exposed only the tip of the iceberg and those who embezzled billions from banks and share market have not been brought to book yet, alleged the leaders.
Referring to an earlier remark of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the party’s general secretary Saiful Huq said, “80 percent of the country’s corruption will be eradicated if the main culprits in the ruling party can be brought under anti-graft purge.”
Earlier, the PM said, “I will take action, we will take action, no matter who they might be, even if they belong to my party. If I want to punish the corrupt, it will have to start from my home.”
Addressing the conference, the leaders expressed their grave concern on the potency of the anti-graft drive.
“Like the govt’s past enterprises, namely anti-drug campaign and anti-adulteration programme, we fear that this anti-graft drive may end in vain, as major criminals are still at large,” said Saiful Huq.
At the programme, the leaders placed their 31-point demand including dissolution of the parliament and re-election, annulment of Digital Security Act and scrapping of Article 70 from the constitution, raising parliament seat to 450, legislation of conscription, and assurance of national security and sovereignty etc.
BWP politburo members Bahnishikha Jamali, Ansar Ali Dulal and Akbar Khan, and central committee member Abu Hassan Tipu, were also present there.
