Govt served legal notice for judicial probe into UGC man's custodial death

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday sent a legal notice to the government seeking a judicial inquiry in 24 hours into the custodial death of a University Grants Commission (UGC) official.

Eunus Ali Akond issued the notice requesting the government to take necessary steps against the persons involved in the incident.

Omar Siraj, an assistant director of UGC, was arrested on September 18 for allegedly leaking medical college admission question papers and died in Rapid Action Battalion's (Rab) custody on October 1. He was under remand for two days.

Eunus said he would file a writ petition with the High Court seeking necessary orders if the government does not form the body.

The Daily Star has reported Omar's family's allegation that he died of torture, he said in the notice.
