Govt to protect rights of small-ethnic groups
With the government’s stand of not allowing anyone to interfere with the rights of small ethnic communities, it [government] will not stay away from taking stern actions against the perpetrators.
This was stated by Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim yesterday while addressing the “Wangala” [the Hundred Drums Festival] celebration programme of the Garo community in the city’s Banani area.
“The daughter of Bangabandhu, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, wants to ensure the constitutional rights of every person in this country. The present government is working in this regard. The government does not want anyone to interfere with the rights of small ethnic groups. If anyone does, the government will take stern action against him/her,” he said.
The minister urged the administration to stay alert so that no ethnic groups are obstructed in practising their cultures.
The people of Garo community made immense sacrifices by participating in the War of Liberation, he said, adding that the premier will always stand by all communities to resolve their problems.
