Govt alert but not worried: Quader
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday ruled out BNP’s concern over party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s security, saying the government is conscious about the issue.
“Khaleda Zia has been kept there (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) after ensuring her necessary security,” Quader said at a press conference at party President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in Dhaka.
Since April 1, Khaleda Zia has been receiving treatment at BSMMU where a bomb-like substance was recovered from in front of its registrar’s office on the second floor on Thursday.
Soon after that, BNP expressed concern about security of its chairperson’s life, and called upon authorities to strengthen her security and proper treatment at BSMMU.
Terming the recovery of the bomb-like substance at the BSMMU an isolated incident, Quader said, “Terrorism is a global problem. Bangladesh is not an isolated country. Nor do we live on an isolated island. Such incidents may happen, but no incident has taken place yet in Bangladesh that we have to be worried about.”
Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, cleared his government’s firm stance in dealing with terrorism, saying that the government is alert but not worried about the issue.
Responding to a query, the Awami League leader said the country’s image and dignity have never been so uplifted in the world since 1975.
“Sheikh Hasina is not a leader who will forget national interest during her foreign trips,” he also told a reporter, adding that such type of remark is indecorous from those “who indulged in all-out corruption during their tenures”.
AL’S 70TH FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY TO BE OBSERVED ON JUNE 23
Awami League has chalked out elaborate monthlong programmes from June 23 across the country to mark its founding anniversary.
As part of the programmes, national and party flags will be hoisted at Bangabandhu Bhaban and AL central office on Bangabandhu Avenue on the morning of June 23.
Later, senior leaders of Awami League -- led by party President Sheikh Hasina -- will place wreaths at the monument of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi road-32 on that day.
On June 24, Awami League will hold a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, where two district-level senior leaders of the party will be accorded reception.
At yesterday’s press conference, Quader asked his party men to send names of two senior leaders from their respective areas to make the event successful.
