Golapganj municipality by-election today
The by-election to Golapganj municipality will be held today with the Election Commission already completing all necessary preparations for it.
The chairman position at the municipality became vacant after chairman Sirajul Jabbar died on May 31. The AL errant won the election in 2015 by defeating the then chairman and AL candidate, Jakaria Ahmed Paplu.
No other political party except Awami League (AL) is taking part in today's election as BNP could not settle for any suitable candidate.
The candidates are Jakaria Ahmed Paplu (Awami League) and independent candidates Aminul Islam Rabel (AL errant), Golam Kibria Chowdhury Sahin and Moshius Sunnah Chowdhury Narjis.
Kibria and Sunnah are participating as independent candidates after refusing nominations from BNP.
The nomination paper of BNP candidate Raju Ahmed Chowdhury was cancelled by the Election Commission.
Golapganj municipality has 21,632 voters in nine of its wards, Saidur Rahman, assistant returning officer of the election, said, adding that they have appointed 9 presiding officers, 59 assistant presiding officers and 118 polling officers to conduct the poll.
