Free school for poor children
A free school has been established for underprivileged students in Savar.
The school, Haji Anwar Ali Oboitanik Shishu Shikkhalay, founded by Active Citizens, a voluntary organisation, started its journey on Monday with 25 students. Active Citizens is a social leadership training programme of the British Council and Democracy Watch.
Situated in Bhagalpur area, the institution is set up in a tin-shed one-storey structure with two rooms.
The school, with classes from playgroup to class-I, will remain open six days a week, except for Fridays, from 10:30am to 12:30pm, said Haji Ali Amjad, director of the school. All the expenses are being covered by members of Active Citizens, he added.
“We had to go door-to-door, convincing parents to send their children to school,” he said, adding, “We'll continue to do so.”
The school was inaugurated by Tabshira Islam Liza, primary education officer in Savar.
Rehana Islam, assistant education officer in Savar, Fatematul Botul, coordinator of Active Citizens, and Shofiqur Rahman, president of Savar Primary Teachers' Association, were also present on the occasion.
