Free health camp held in Tangail

Three thousand underprivileged patients yesterday received free health consultancy, medicine and laboratory tests from specialist doctors at a free medical camp in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail.

Kidney Awareness Monitoring and Prevention Society (KAMPS), a non-profit organisation, arranged the daylong free medical camp and health education fair at “Talim Ghar” in Hatibandha village under the upazila, aiming to pay tribute to the language martyrs on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, said a press release.

A seminar titled "healthy kidney for all and everywhere" was also held at the camp, where Advocate Joaherul Islam, lawmaker of Tangail-8 constituency, was present as chief guest while Md Shahidul Islam, deputy commissioner (DC) of Tangail, presided over the seminar.

Prof MA Samad, founder and president of KAMPS, also chief consultant of BRB Hospitals Limited, presented the keynote paper at the seminar.

Addressing the seminar, Joaherul Islam MP said organising such a humanistic programme is certainly a praiseworthy work that facilitates access to treatment for the underprivileged patients.

In the keynote speech, Prof Samad said diabetes is the most harmful disease in the current civilized world which leads to kidney diseases.

Currently as many as 80 lakh people in the country are affected by diabetes due to a lack of awareness and unhealthy lifestyle, he added.

KAMPS has been arranging this programme for the last 14 years at the same venue to provide healthcare and humanitarian support to the underprivileged patients in Tangail and adjacent areas.

Dr Sharif Hossain Khan, civil surgeon of Tangail; Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, former skipper of the national cricket team; Shawkat Shikder, chairman of Shakhipur Upazila Parisad; Md Aminur Rahman, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Shakhipur; Prof Dr Md Abdul Halim, principal of Kumidini Women's Medical College Hospital; and Nasrin Begum, managing director of KAMPS, among others, spoke on the occasion.
