Former BCL leader arrested over extortion
Police arrested a former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader in an extortion case in Mymensingh early yesterday.
The arrestee -- Abdullah Al Mamun Arif, former president of the city unit of the pro-Awami League student organisation -- is also the prime accused in Jubo League leader Reazul Karim Russel murder case, said police.
Arif is on bail in the murder case, said detectives.
Following his confession, police recovered a foreign pistol with four rounds of bullets from a bush in the town’s Kachari Ferry Ghat area around 3am, said Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of police in Mymensingh.
Earlier, Abu Hanif, a deed writer and secretary of “Mymensingh Dalil Lekhok Samity” filed the extortion case accusing some 12 persons including Arif on May 27, said the OC.
A Mymensingh court placed Arif on a three-day remand when law enforcers produced him before it with a seven-day remand prayer yesterday, said court inspector Sheikh Kabirul Islam.
Earlier on May 14, assailants stabbed Reazul Karim Russel, 34, to death near the city’s Mrittunjoy School. A member of the district unit of Jubo League, Russel was also a former vice president of district BCL.
