Father Rigon's mortal remains arrive today
The mortal remains of “Friends of Liberation War Honour” recipient Father Marino Rigon, who died in October last year, will arrive in Bangladesh today for burial.
Honouring his last wish, his remains will be buried at the yard of Shelabunia Church, founded by him in Mongla upazila in Bagerhat district.
The Bangladesh government has completed all necessary arrangements to this end, said a foreign ministry press release.
In recognition of his contributions, the Bangladeshi government gave Father Rigon, an Italian national, honorary citizenship in 2009.
In 2012, he was conferred the “Friends of Liberation War Honour” award for his support and contribution during the country's war of independence.
On October 20, 2017, Father Rigon breathed his last in Italy's Vicenza, at the age of 92.
Father Marino Rigon was born on January 5, 1925 at Villaverla in Italy. He came to Bangladesh in 1953 to spread the teachings of Christianity. Soon, his warmth and affection endeared him to people, irrespective of religion, caste and creed.
