Faruk Murder Case

Ex-MP Rana's bail stayed

The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday stayed a High Court (HC) order that granted bail to former Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.

Chamber Judge of the apex court Justice Hassan Foez Siddique passed the order and sent the petition to the full bench for hearing on March 31, Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star.

Following the order, Rana cannot get released from jail until a further order of the apex court, the DAG added.

On March 14, the HC bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman granted six months' bail to the former lawmaker in the murder case.

According to the case, the bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader of Tangail, was found on January 18, 2013. Police found evidence of Rana's involvement in the killing.

Rana was sent to jail after his surrender before a lower court in July 2015 in connection with the case.
