End all forms of violence against women

Urges Mohila Parishad

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, a women's rights organisation, yesterday called for an end to all forms of violence against women.

Women are being harassed in the workplace, at home, and on the roads, speakers said at a programme on the BMP premises at the capital's Segunbagicha, marking the declaration on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (Cedaw) on September 3.

BMP President Ayesha Khanam said gender sensitivity should be incorporated into school curriculum, and family members should be aware of discrimination between sons and daughters.

Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, joint commissioner of DMP, said violence against women on the road could be reduced if streets are free from hawkers, and public transport services keep women's safety in mind.

Shabnam Azim, assistant professor of the department of mass communication and journalism at Dhaka University, said law enforcement should be more serious about cases of sexual harassment, and be sensitive when a woman files a general diary with police station.

Alhaz Malik Kabir Newaz, general secretary of shop owners of Gausia Market said they have installed 64 CCTV cameras in the market to prevent stalking or harassment of women and girls.
