An elephant trampled a man to death in Chattogram’s Anwara upazila early yesterday.
The deceased, Akther Hossen, 55, was a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver, from Boirag union of the upazila.
Sufol Chandra Sinho, sub-inspector of Anwara Police Station, said several elephants arrived at the village from a nearby hill in search of food.
People guarded the village and scared away the animals using firecrackers, he said.
“A herd of elephants attacked the village. When people were fleeing, Akther slipped and fell, and was trampled by an elephant,” the SI added.
Quoting locals, SI Sufol said that locals claimed to have sought help from the forest department but they did nothing. Abu Naser Md Yeasin Neyaz, divisional forest officer of Chattogram, refused to comment when contacted.
