DU students protest attack on fellows
A group of Dhaka University students yesterday formed a human chain on the campus, protesting attacks on several DU studentsincluding Dhaka University Journalists Association general secretary HM Imran Hossain.
Around 50 students including activists of different student organisations took part in the programme held at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture.
The speakers demanded immediate arrest and punishment for those who attacked Imran Hossain in Jhenidah, Chhatra League leader Sayeed Khan Shawon in Sylhet, Sazzad Hossain Shihab in Cox's Bazar. They also sought that the authorities introduce an emergency helpline to ensure students' security.
Addressing the human chain, former Ducsu member Tanbir Hasan Shaikat said, "It's a matter of regret that DU students are being attacked for protesting unjust activities."
"Local ward member and his followers swooped on the Duja general secretary when he protested against the irregularities in distributing sacrificial meat meant for underprivileged families. The administration is yet to take steps although the incident has been reported in the media," he added.
"In this pandemic situation… we have to stand here demanding justice for our fellows. Such incidents portray the long-standing culture of impunity in our country," said Tarek Hasan Nirjhor, a student of mass communication and journalism department of DU.
HM Imran, also DU correspondent of UNB, and his younger brother came under attack allegedly by Azizur Rahman, a member of ward-2 at Banshbaria Union Parishad under Maheshpur upazila in Jhenidah, and his followers when they protested uneven distribution of sacrificial meat.
Talking to The Daily Star Imran alleged that Aziz took 20kg of meat for himself from a portion, which was supposed to be distributed among the underprivileged villagers.
Azizur Rahman said he neither attacked anyone nor took sacrificial meat meant for the poor.
