DU students halt demo
After demonstrating for six consecutive days, agitating students of Dhaka University yesterday declared to resume classes and examinations, following assurance from the university authorities.
Shakil Mia, spokesperson of the movement, made the announcement at a press conference held at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla.
“We welcome the decision of forming a committee to resolve the crisis that was created centring the affiliation of seven colleges. We decided to withdraw class boycotting programme following their assurance,” Shakil Mia told journalists.
He said other agitation programmes will continue and they will determine the next course of action considering authorities’ steps.
The demonstrators will submit a memorandum to President Abdul Hamid, also chancellor of the university, on Sunday to press home their demands.
The students boycotted academic activities till Tuesday by padlocking all academic and administrative buildings.
On Wednesday, the university authorities formed an 11-member committee to resolve the problems created centring the affiliation and demands of students.
The committee, headed by pro-vice chancellor (administration) Muhammad Samad, was asked to submit their recommendation in 10 working days.
On February 17, 2017, the government affiliated Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College with Dhaka University.
