DU students demand temporary library
A section of Dhaka University students yesterday formed a human chain demanding that the authorities build a makeshift library until construction of the new library complex begins.
Around 200 students from different departments took part in the human chain in front of DU central library after failing to find seats inside.
Students placed their four-point demand, including setting up a new digital and enriched library complex which will be capable of meeting students’ academic needs, turning a building into a temporary library complex till construction of a new library, keeping emergency exits in the library, and taking action to prevent outsiders from entering the library.
Tawhid Hasan, a student of political science department, said, “We often fail to get a single seat as outsiders -- from different colleges and former students -- occupy most of the library seats.”
“Though Dhaka University constructed many complexes, it has failed to solve seat crisis [at the central library]. It’s a pressing issue but they don’t pay any heed to resolve the problem. We have to come before 6am to get an empty seat. We urge university authorities to fulfill our demands immediately,” said Saiful Islam, a fourth year student of Persian language and literature department.
The students also sought Ducsu and Chhatra League’s cooperation to realise their four-point demand.
